Hay Haunting!

It is cold outside and we have the first snow of the season.  My daughter is sledding and my husband is shoveling.  I just put the Lion Cub down for a nap, but I’ll probably be out there taking pictures soon.

I just pulled my cozy, soft, hand-knit headband out of the pocket of my rainjacket, and lo and behold, it was covered in hay!  What the —  ??  It took me a minute to figure out it was just some final remnants from my horse career days.  It has been over 4 years since my Blue Dragon was born and I quit my job as the horsemanship teacher at the boarding school.  But there’s still hay in my raincoat pocket!  If you’ve ever fed farm animals, stacked hay, or helping with hay baling, you know how it gets into every itchy nook and cranny of your body and your clothing.  I guess I just didn’t realize how long it sticks around for after that!  Except for the fact that it itchy-fied my headband, it was kind of a nice reminder that somewhere inside the depth of my old jacket pockets, I’m still a wrangler woman.

But even without the traces of hay, there’s always that smell… horse, hay, sweat, manure, and leather… eau de horsie girl heaven!
